Arts And Crafts - Recycling Christmas Cards
By: Darvin J. Hooey

If you are a supporter of Mother Nature, you have to continue recycling Christmas cards , Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and other greeting cards as well. Many greeting cards are bought and given throughout these holiday seasons. In spite of the popularity of the internet and electronic greeting cards:e-cards, most greeting cards are still made of paper, which of course comes from trees. Sadly, these paper cards are only enjoyed for a little while, and then they are trashed! I'm not suggesting that you have to stop using paper cards, but I am requesting that if you insist on using paper cards, why not purchase cards made from recycled material (or recycled greeting cards), AND begin recycling Christmas cards when you're done with them. This recycling can occur either by taking them to a recycling facility or buy reusing them for your own arts and crafts.

Doing some online research will provide you with a number of local and national paper recycling facilities and charities that will take your used greeting cards. Below, however, I would like to provide to you some of the crafts and even gifts that can be created with your used cards. Rather than just tossing your holiday cards in the trash, they can be recycled to bring entertainment to your family and others.

Here are a few of the many projects you can try:

Bookmarks: just cut covers of greeting cards with pretty pictures to make your own personalized bookmarks, because this is much cheaper than buying them...

Concentration Game: Most of us have played this card matching game as a child. Now your kids can grow and learn with a personalized set of cards!

Greeting Cards!: This sounds hard but it is not. Just cut off the covers of cards, removing the page with the writing on it, and then connect the cover to a blank second page. These blanks can be purchased at most arts and crafts stores.

Post Cards: Create holiday postcards by cutting off the back half of greeting cards (i.e., the page without writing, behind the cover). You can then draft your personal greeting and mailing address on the blank side of the cover, and then affix postage. You even save more money here, since postcards are less expensive to mail than letters!

These represent just some of the great ideas I've come across. What ideas do you have?

Save money and the environment by recycling Christmas cards and other greeting cards. Here are a lot more craft ideas and giving opportunities for recycling Christmas cards.
