On top of all this, your overall health will improve dramatically. This is something every woman that suffers chronic yeast infections should be happy to hear.

Relief from yeast infections may seem the only thought on your mind while enduring symptoms that include burning, swelling, and painful itching that can literally bring you to the breaking point. But if you really want to get past not just this yeast infection, but yeast infections forever, having a solid understanding of the underlying causes of what allows yeast infections to occur in the first place is absolutely necessary.

Any woman who has suffered at least one yeast infection is aware of the common symptoms. These include: burning, itching, and swelling in the area of the vulva and vagina, painful and frequent urination, discharge from the vagina that resembles cottage cheese, and discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse.

What Causes a Yeast Infection?

The infection, scientifically called candidiasis, occurs when there is an overabundance of the fungus known as Candida albicans in any moist area of the body that provides an environment conducive to its growth. Small amounts of different types of Candida albicans, of which there are at least 25 different variations, are normally present in the vagina, mouth, skin, and bowels. Bacteria actually keep Candida in check and all is well as long as long as the proportion of Candida to bacteria stays in balance.

The imbalance that leads to a vaginal yeast infection occurs when the internal environment of the body allows the Candida to grow and multiply or when that environment makes it difficult for other microorganisms to survive. Leading factors that can cause this overgrowth of Candida include hormonal changes during pregnancy or menstrual cycle, the use of birth control pills, exposure to viruses, toxins, yeast, and parasites, and the use of antibiotics.

The use of antibiotics is prescribed to kill the bad bacteria when you are sick. Unfortunately the antibiotics can also kill the good bacteria. An imbalance in your immune system subsequently occurs creating an ideal climate for a yeast infection.

Additionally, lifestyle and stress can be contributing factors. Poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle are factors that should not be overlooked. Yeast infections can also simply be a matter of bad genes.

Sexual activity can lead to infections when semen upsets the acidic environment of the vagina. Poor feminine hygiene, wearing tight clothes, panty hose, or wet bathing suits also provide an ideal environment for a yeast infection. Frequent douching, the use of deodorized tampons or perfumed feminine sprays are also frequent causes.
