Emotional eating or comfort eating is one of the most frequent obstacles people confront while trying to stick to a weight loss plan but it really is achievable to lose 14 pounds in one month and without joining a sports club or weight loss club or putting yourself through some agonising diet that makes you wonder why you ever want to get up in the morning at all!
Don’t despair! Have you actually looked at how many sites there are out there for weight loss programmes? Look at the top of one of the search engine pages next time you log on; there are literally millions. You are not by yourself!
Triggers such as acute stress, anxiety or shock, however minor can initiate a need for quick comfort
Overcoming emotional eating shouldn’t require some punishing regime but be more about redefining your connection with food and finding an alternative energy boost to high calorie pick-me-ups; sugary snacks that give you an on the spot boost and then let you down again very quickly without feeling fulfilled.
It is possible to be trained to survive the stress in your life and deal with it without the need to dip into the biscuit tin or pig out on cream cakes. You will make much quicker progress in achieving your ideal weight if you don’t consol yourself with fatty foods each time you feel a bit low. Of course I and most other reasonable folk will tell you to drink more water each day but I won’t tell you that I never have a cup of coffee – but it’s almost black and it certainly isn’t a giant cappuccino or latte. And why do the cups in most major coffee chains have to be so enormous? Have a cup of coffee for goodness sake not a bucket of the stuff!
Feel good about yourself!
Sadly a lot of people on yo-yo diets won’t. You know that constant cycle of gaining and then losing weight that just goes on for ever and can lead to low self regard if you’re not sensible. How much better would it be if you trained your mind not to desire those snacks or fatty foods and just how GREAT would you feel on achieving your own goal of how YOU want to look, and then keeping that look – for good?
Exercise
Sorry, but that ‘E’ word does have to mentioned!
Did you know that diet aside if you complete regular aerobic exercises like swimming, walking, jogging and the rest you will not merely be burning calories but will be working your cardiovascular system and speeding up your metabolism not only for the duration of the activity but even after you’ve stopped. Life Coach Ali Campbell has written extensively about this but in simple terms the more you work out the more lean muscle you build up and that muscle will burn calories even when you are just sitting or sleeping! Exercise is also a fantastic way to reduce stress as during exercise your body releases nature’s own feel good chemicals, endorphins and serotonin which help to suppress depression.
Whether you call the problem emotional eating or comfort eating it is a problem, and you CAN overcome it with a few easy changes that will help you to lose weight healthily, permanently and every bit as significant make you feel so much better about yourself.
