Planning And Placement Of Porcelain Veneers, Information For Prospective Patients
By: Pascale Jones

There are many people that are looking to achieve the perfect smile. Porcelain veneers can help a person achieve a dramatically improved smile. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic porcelain that is placed on the surface of the teeth to give people a straight, white smile. When considering cosmetic dentistry such as veneers a person should seek a consultation with an cosmetic dentist experienced with porcelain veneers to learn more about the procedure and if they are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. In most cases it takes three office visits to complete the porcelain veneers. Here is what a patient should expect during each visit.

Initial Consultation for Porcelain Veneers

Patients that are considering having porcelain veneers to correct flaws such as crooked teeth, stained teeth, or chipped teeth will first schedule a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist. During the initial consultation the dentist will describe the procedure and determine the size, color, and type of porcelain veneers that will be used. Some cosmetic dentist will use cosmetic digital imaging to show the patient the expected outcome.

Preparing for Porcelain Veneers

Typically, during the second visit the cosmetic dentist will prepare the teeth for the porcelain veneers. The preparation of the teeth consists of removing a small amount of enamel to accommodate the porcelain veneers. The cosmetic dentist will also make a mold of the teeth for use in making the permanent veneers. Finally, the dentist will place a set of temporary veneers to protect the teeth while their porcelain veneers are being created.

Placing the Permanent Porcelain Veneers

At the third visit with the cosmetic dentist the permanent porcelain veneers will be placed. During this visit the dentist will bond the porcelain veneers to the teeth with dental cement. The dentist will then adjust the fit and color of the veneers. After this is completed the dentist will use a special light to harden the cement. Patients leave the office with a brighter, whiter smile.

Find a Costa Mesa dentist or porcelain dental veneers and dental bonding specialist.
