Overview Of Dental Implants, Information For Implant Dentistry Patients
By: Pascale Jones

When people are missing teeth they often consult a dentist that is experienced in restorative dentistry to explore the option of dental implants. Dental implants can replace missing teeth with implants that look and feel like their own teeth. Dental implants consist of titanium posts that are directly placed in the jawbone and then fitted with a replacement tooth for a permanent option for the missing teeth.

Good Candidates for Restorative Dentistry

A patient considering dental implants or other restorative dentistry will go through a rigorous screening process. This screening process may include a CT scan to determine if there is proper bone structure. Sometimes when the patient does not have adequate bone structure a bone graft can be performed prior to the dental implants to build up the jawbone. A good candidate for dental implants will have good oral health. Additionally, they should be in good physical health to be able to endure the surgery and recovery process.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Patients that are missing teeth due to age, disease or trauma often are left with a poor self image and changes in appearance that can often be corrected with restorative dentistry procedures such as dental implants. Dental implants offer a more stable option for patients missing teeth than conventional dentures. They can also help prevent bone loss and gum recession due to the stimulation of the underlying bone which could deteriorate from neglect.

Risks Involved with Dental Implants

Dental implants are placed during a surgical procedure therefore just like any other surgical procedure there are some risks involved. Some risks include infection, tissue damage, and lack of integration into the bone. In addition, there are some patients that are not suited for the procedure such as those that have had radiation therapy in the mouth area or have certain diseases as this lowers the success rate.

Find a implant dentist, cosmetic dentist, or cosmetic dentistry specialist.
