Since the beginning of time, natural herbal remedy has been in use; and it continues to be effective up to this day. In any part of the world today, almost 80% of people turn to natural herbal remedy for curing various ailments.

Herbs have certain properties that, when used correctly, is of great therapeutic assistance. They have distinct odors and tastes. They may be used as is, or as part of a preparation to help treat the symptoms of as well as the sickness itself.

An example of a natural herbal remedy that is widely used today as an ingredient in some medications is ephedra. Being marketed today as ephedrine, ephedra has been known to relieve asthma and other respiratory problems. The Chinese were known to have been using this herb for many years now.

The late 1700s saw the amazing effects of the foxglove plant in the human body. It is a natural herbal remedy known to stimulate the muscles of the heart. The chemicals found in the plant are being used these days as a main ingredient of the medicine known as digitalis.

Ayurvedic and Chinese Herbalism

Today, there are two known forms of herbalism: Ayurvedic and Chinese. Ayurvedic herbalism was started out by the Greeks and Romans, and later on reached the rest of Europe and the Americas. Chinese herbalism, on the other hand, was used in China even during the ancient times. Each form of the natural herbal remedy is effective in treating certain ailments.

People prefer a natural herbal remedy as a form of alternative medicine because it is known to produce no side effects, thus it is more focused on getting rid of the ailment. For instance, St. John's Wort, a drug already approved in Germany, uses herbs as its main ingredient for treating major depression. This serves as an alternative to the drug known as Prozac.

Another widely-used natural herbal remedy these days is the Aloe Vera plant. The gel found in the leaves of Aloe Vera is great for soothing skin burns, relieving hives, as well as getting rid of constipation. The gel is also a popular ingredient in most cosmetic and skin care products available in the market today.

Ginkgo Biloba is loaded with anti-oxidants. We all know the beneficial effects of anti-oxidants to the body. That is why Ginkgo Biloba is a herbal treatment used by people suffering from memory loss, migraine, nausea and vomiting, depression and confusion. The herb has remarkable effects on the circulatory and the nervous system.
