Mole Remover Options And Side Effects
By: darell belen

One of the most common types of skin blemishes are moles, known to the medical community as melanocytic nevi. Although moles are benign, they can be confused with certain types of cancerous growths. Many people are born with moles, while others may acquire them during their lifetime. Because many people see them as unattractive and they can sometimes be uncomfortable, there is a rather good market for various types of mole remover.

Some people may not think of them as moles, but the American Academy of Dermatology classifies skin tags as such. These are relatively easy to remove, as many people with them already know. Many people have success with at-home methods including twisting the tags repeatedly and/or tying them off with a sterile thread or dental floss.

Flat or slightly raised, dark-colored blemishes are more commonly thought of as traditional moles. These moles are more difficult to remove because of their particular characteristics. Dermatologists most often remove these types of moles, using a surgical or laser method. The use of lasers for this surgery is commonplace, now.

All of the typical surgical risks, including the risk of infection and anesthetic reaction are possibilities with surgical removal. Also there are other risks specific to this type of surgery, such as re-growth and certain types of scarring. Moles should only be removed after a thorough evaluation from a dermatologist because removal of a cancerous lesion can make it very difficult to diagnose before it spreads.

The home remedies that exist for the removal of a mole do not work in most of the cases. Treating moles at home is common because if they are benign (which most are), their surgical removal is considered a cosmetic procedure and not covered by insurance. Raised moles can sometimes be removed like a skin tag, but flat ones are harder to deal with yourself. It's important to consult a dermatologist if the mole in question has changed at all - this can be a sign of cancer.

Some substances anecdotally appear to cause the shrinkage or disappearances of moles. These include a wide variety of things, but apple cider vinegar and garlic appear to be the most popular choices. Sometimes it is recommended that the moles be scratched or pricked with a needle in order to allow the substance access. If this is done, everything must be carefully sterilized before use and the area must be protected with a bandage until it heals.

Entirely removing moles is difficult, because they often penetrate through most of the skin layers. This is a problem faced by both medical and home removal methods. Sometimes these moles re-grow harmlessly, but they can re-grow bigger and more uncomfortable, or even as a more dangerous type of lesion.

While generally harmless, some moles can turn into cancer, or cancer can be mistaken for moles. Checking them regularly for signs of changes in shape, size or pigment can help you keep an eye out for this. If you plan to use any kind of mole remover, it's a good idea to get a doctor's opinion beforehand, just so that you know you are not removing a potentially cancerous lesion.
