Is There Another Treatment For ADHD Aside From Prescription Drugs?
By: Martha Gardner

For concerned parents whose children have been suffering from side effects brought about by ADHD medications, this question may keep popping up in their minds: Is there another treatment for ADHD aside from prescription drugs?

Fortunately, the answer to this question is YES. There is another way to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In fact, there are many other ways aside from using drugs. These alternative treatments may not be given much significance by doctors, though, for whatever reasons they may have. Some people believe that doctors usually choose to use prescription drugs in their treatment plan because medical companies are paying them to do it. Alternative treatments, on the other hand, are as effective as ADHD medications but due to lack of funding support, they are not widely recommended and used by doctors.

However, parents can request their doctors to eliminate prescription medications in the treatment of their child’s ADHD and use natural alternative medications instead. Close communication between the parents and the doctor is required so they can device an effective treatment plan and choose the right alternative treatment.

Here is a list of natural alternative treatments that parents can choose from:

• Nutrition and Diet Therapy. Recent studies have shown that making changes in the diet of an ADHD patient can help improve the symptoms of the disorder. It is especially recommended to avoid giving children food that contains a high amount of sugar. Sugar can heighten hyperactivity and aggressive behavior in children. Reduction of sugar in the diet of ADHD children has been observed to have wonderful effects in improving behavior.
• Herbal and Homeopathic Remedies. These natural alternative treatments have ingredients derived from natural substances such as plants and sometimes animals. Regular use of these remedies can boost the overall health and general immunity of children and can lead to many improvements including the reduction of hyperactivity and restlessness, improved grades, enhanced socialization ability, and reduced aggressiveness.
• Cognitive and Behavior Therapies. An ADHD patient can undergo cognitive and behavior therapies which are designed to help ADHD children and their parents to understand more about the disorder and how to cope with it emotionally.
• Parental Support and Guidance. Parents can set up routines which can help their child understand the flow of things. They can also guide the child in everyday activities and give their support in every activity that the child involves himself in.
• Exercise and Sports Activities. Exercise and sports can burn out the energy of ADHD children and help in releasing their overactive emotional energy, thus reducing their hyperactivity.
• School Support. Teachers can give considerations for children with ADHD. They can let these children crawl, move, or walk around during class hours so they can have an outlet for their restlessness. Teachers can also make daily reports and talk with the children’s parents to easily point out any recurring problems or perhaps improvements in the child’s behavior. Their close monitoring can help parents and doctors find the right treatment for the child.

If you are wary of giving your ADHD child medications because of their known side effects, do not hesitate to ask your doctor about alternative treatments.
