Herbs For ADHD: Why Parents Should Use Them Instead Of Drugs
By: Andrew Howard

The over use of ADHD drugs in American children has caused quite a stir among the populace. According to statistics, America has more ADHD children compared to UK and EU. Most of these children are given prescription drugs as treatment. Since a number of side effects have been reported to affect the children taking ADHD medications, parents are finding new ways to treat ADHD than the use of these dangerous drugs.

Although the most commonly used treatment for ADHD involves medications, there are actually a number of alternative treatments that exist. One of these is the use of herbs for ADHD. Other alternative treatments include homeopathic remedies, biofeedback, tomatis listening therapy, essential fatty acids, auditory stimulation, art therapy, movement therapy, bach flower remedies, counseling, parents’ and teachers’ support, and guidance.

What is good about ADHD herbs and other natural alternative treatments is that they do not contain any harmful chemical that can lead to side effects. Therefore, they are perfectly safe even for children.

Apart from being safe, there are a number of other reasons why parents should use ADHD herbs instead of drugs.

• Herbs are non-addictive. Some children taking medications have been reported to have become dependent on the substances given to them. Herbs do not have the addictive properties that prescription drugs have.

• Herbs have no withdrawal effect. Some stimulant drugs used to treat ADHD can have withdrawal effects on the person taking them, such as cardiac arrest. Herbs, on the other hand, have none of these withdrawal effects.

• Herbs are less expensive than prescription drugs.

• Herbs can boost overall health.

Herbs are not new at all. They have been the first kind of medicine used for treating different health conditions in the past. They have been used widely by our aborigines way before drugs came to exist.

Many ADHD herbs are available in the market. You can choose from a number of various kinds. Some useful herbs are

• Gingko Biloba. This increases children’s attention span and help them get some focus.

• Valerian. Calming herb used as a sleeping aid.

• Chamomile. Has the same effect as the Valerian.

• Siberian Ginseng. This herb can help children concentrate in their tasks.

• Gotu Kola, Kava Kava, and St. John’s Wort. These herbs are used to relieve anxiety and depression.

There are products available that already contain a mixture of the herbs mentioned above. However, before buying any of those products, it is essential to make a little research first. Know what company created the product, its ingredients – if they are pure, and how they are processed. It is important that you are sure the product you buy is genuine so there won’t be problems while taking them.
