Bleeding Hemroids
By: Donald Urquhart

Bleeding hemroids are usually the number one cause for severe anxiety when it comes to hemroids. Hemroids may itch and hurt, but you usually know what they are and what's going on by the time they start. When they bleed, on the other hand, it often comes as a complete surprise. In addition, because of the dilution effect of water, if you're bleeding for the first time into the toilet bowl it can seem like you're bleeding to death! Fortunately, hemroidal bleeding is never life-threatening. Still, it's a shock at the best of times.

The reason for the surprise is the nature of hemroids that bleed. Most bleeding hemroids are internal hemroids. Internal hemroids usually don't hurt because the intestinal tissue that they come from doesn't have a lot of nerves. That intestinal tissue is also a lot thinner and has a lot more blood vessels near the surface than external skin, so they bleed at almost any provocation. Most people don't even know they've got internal hemroids until those hemroids start bleeding for some reason. Of course, the first time you see blood coming from the anal area, you need to go see a doctor. Anal bleeding can indicate a number of different health conditions, some of which are dangerous. However, once your doctor has determined you've got bleeding hemroids, you can really stop worrying and start eliminating them.

The first thing to do is get away from any potential cause of bleeding. You'll want to slowly increase your dietary fiber and water intake so that bowel movements are as soft and easy to pass as possible. I say slowly increase dietary fiber because if you increase it too fast, you'll get gassy and bloated. There's no point in trading one miserable health condition for another. So, introduce one or two new fiber-rich foods per week until you've gotten up to the normal 25 to 30 grams per day. Increase your water intake to approximately 64 ounces per day, or the fiber will turn to so much intestinal concrete and completely defeat the purpose. In addition, stay away from caffeine as much as possible. Caffeine is a diuretic, which means that it causes your body to lose water.

Eliminate tight clothing or underwear. The best underwear to use is the loose cotton kind, preferably without dyes. In addition, if problems persist, you may look into changing your laundry detergent to a hypoallergenic kind and see if that helps. Don't sit for more than five minutes at a time on the toilet. If you aren't done in five minutes, get up and walk around for a bit and try again. Of course, while on the toilet do not strain. Downward pressure from the muscles in your abdomen will only make hemroids bleed more.

The techniques listed above are only the beginning for helping bleeding hemroids. Investigation and implementation can reveal many tips and tricks that will work for you. A few things to keep in mind during your search: never use an external cream on an internal hemroid, never take any medication you don't understand, and check all assertions carefully before exposing yourself to potential harm. With a bit of inquisitiveness and common sense, you should have your bleeding hemroids under control in no time.
