Bacterial Vaginosis
By: Janet Henderson

Bacterial vaginosis is a term that you should teach your teenager about. Whether she’s a girl or a boy, she needs to know what BV is.

Here’s why.

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition where the bacterial flora in the vagina has been disrupted and the natural balance needs to be re-established. When this happens, it’s easy for one of the bacteria that are usually in lower numbers to start multiplying in a rampant way.

When this continues for a long time, the bacteria has a chance to establish itself as the primary bacteria in the flora. Then an odor starts coming from the vagina. The odor alone can be frightening to a young teenage girl who has it.

Even adults who have BV start avoiding human contact and ignoring social skills when they have the fishy odor associated with bacterial vaginosis. They hear others talking about the smell behind their back; yet, they are already seeking treatment for BV which simply is not working. Imagine the social ramifications of this if it continues for several months, then several years, or even several decades.

A teenage girl is vulnerable to outside events affecting her sexuality. And her sexuality must be grounded fully; otherwise, she could struggle with low self-esteem and develop paranoia about how she smells. It’s difficult enough for young adults now to find a good partner who won’t lie, cheat or steal; let alone finding a good partner for life. And if it takes a young woman years to figure out her sexual issues, it adds an extra challenge into their relationships which are difficult enough to maintain under the best circumstances.

Bacterial vaginosis is also frightening to a teenage boy. Imagine the scenario where a 17 or 18-year-old boy has his first true love and she is totally in love with him… BUT after a few months, she develops the fishy odor of BV. Now any normal and unknowing male could easily assume that she has bacterial vaginosis because she was fooling around on him. And if he assumes this, the relationship is doomed… and for what? For the reason that he didn’t know the odor of BV could be due to something else other than a sexually transmitted disease. And it’s doomed for the reason that she didn’t know any better either!

Years later, they could think back about their true love after finding out the truth about BV and the memory alone could be enough to make them consider leaving another suitable partner! It’s just not worth it.

So please do teach your children about bacterial vaginosis. It could save their relationships.

Finding out more about bacterial vaginosis can save your life. Don’t waste time. You could have BV right now. One article is never enough information. You need more.
