ADHD Treatment: Drugs Used In ADHD For Good
By: Romell Khu

Scientists have developed a number of medications intended to address the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). However, no cure has yet been found to cure ADHD altogether. The only thing that the present ADHD treatment can do is to relieve the symptoms.

There are three ways that doctors may include in their plan on treating ADHD or at least manage its symptoms.

• Counseling. Usually, counseling is done to help the child and the parents understand ADHD better. It is also meant to help the child and the parents to cope with their feelings and get rid of or at least minimize unwanted behaviors. Counseling is important as it can help the child to deal with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and stubborn behaviors. Social skills training, parental training, and psychotherapy are included in counseling.
• Behavioral management. Techniques on behavioral management are especially designed to help the child and the parents identify superfluous behavior and try to help improve these behaviors.
• Medication. This is the most common ADHD treatment that is included in the treatment plan of doctors. Medications are given to the child to help improve or relieve the symptoms, making the child perform better in school, at home, and with friends, teachers, and parents. Medications are known to have unwanted side effects especially when taken in wrong doses but they are also known to effectively relieve symptoms in some children especially when the doctor’s advice is followed.

The most common method used for ADHD treatment in children is the ADHD medications. Medications for treating ADHD come in several types and their use depends upon the type of ADHD present in children. Below are some of the ADHD medications prescribed by doctors for treating ADHD.

• Stimulants. These are the most common type of medications used for treating ADHD. Stimulants have been proven to be effective in relieving the symptoms of ADHD and have been widely used by many specialists for ADHD treatment. Some stimulants used for treating ADHD are Ritalin, Concerta, Dexedrine, and Adderall.

Stimulants are believed to increase the dopamine levels in the brain, boosting focus and concentration while reducing impulsive and hyperactive behaviors. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is closely associated with attention, movement, and motivation. Although stimulants are known to have a stimulating effect on most people, it has a calming effect on ADHD children. However, stimulants may also cause side effects on the child. Some known side effects resulting from the intake of stimulant medications are personality changes, headaches, upset stomach, dizziness, depression, loss of appetite, and sleeping problems to name a few.

• Non-stimulant medications for ADHD and ADD. These medications are usually used when the stimulants used for ADHD treatment do not work or have brought about the onset of many serious side effects. Non-stimulant medications include the drug Strattera, which is thought to boost the levels of norepinephrine in the brain.

All prescription drugs used for ADHD treatment may bring dangerous side effects to the child. Therefore, it is best to keep close contact with the doctor and follow the doctor’s advice on dosage and time of medication. If anything goes wrong with the medication, inform the doctor immediately so the medication may be changed.

Alternative remedies can also be used for treating ADHD. However, before you choose alternative methods for your child, consult the doctor first and make a little investigation on the alternative treatment you are planning to use.
