ADHD Information That People Should Be Aware Of
By: Joshua Yung

Ever wonder what ADHD really is and how it can be addressed? This article will give you bits of ADHD information that are vital for you to know.

ADHD is an acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is one of the most common behavioral disorders that can affect children. In fact, in the USA alone, statistics show that 5% to 9% of children have ADHD. This accounts for almost 35% of children who were referred to mental health professionals for diagnosis and treatment.

It is not only children that can be affected by ADHD; teens and adults can also have ADHD. Usually, adults who have ADHD already have the disorder when they were children. Often, children diagnosed with ADHD never outgrow the disorder. In some instances, some adults were not diagnosed during childhood but they actually have the disorder all along.

ADHD has a broad diagnosis and is divided into three categories:
• Hyperactive-impulsive type. Children with ADHD are usually hyperactive and impulsive. They are always on the go, talk a lot, fidget, squirm, and are always busy. They might walk, run, climb, or crawl at the most unexpected places and in inappropriate times. They cannot control their emotions and may say or do things without thinking of the consequences first.
• Inattentive type. ADHD patients have difficulty focusing on certain tasks. They are easily distracted and have difficulty finishing a task. They have problems following directions. They also get easily bored, especially when the task tends to be repetitive.
• A combination of the hyperactive-impulsive type and the inactive type. This type of ADHD disorder is the most common.

So far, there is still no known cause of ADHD but scientists have made several medications intended to help get rid of its symptoms. Some of the most common medications given to patients with ADHD are Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Wellbutrin, Strattera, and many more. These medications, however, are known to have side effects that adversely affect those taking them. These side effects include but are not limited to vomiting, nausea, headaches, stomach aches, high blood pressure, palpitations, skin allergies, dependency on the substance, and suicidal tendencies.

Because of the side effects that are brought about by the ADHD medications, people have since looked for alternative ways to address the symptoms of ADHD. Instead of prescription drugs, some people have turned to therapy, homeopathic remedies, and herbal remedies as alternative treatments.

Although doctors still recommend the use of ADHD medications, the use of alternative treatments are gaining ground. Aside from being effective in alleviating symptoms, alternative treatments such as homeopathic remedies and herbal remedies are also proven to be safe for adults and children alike. Side effects are not an issue for these alternative treatments; that is why more and more people are now using them.

However, it is vital to consult and talk to the doctor before giving the ADHD patient alternative remedies. The patients require close monitoring of the physician to make sure the treatment given to them is working well for them or if changes are needed to make the treatment effective.

The ADHD information given in this article is only a portion of the many things that should be learned about ADHD. If you have a love one who is suffering from ADHD, you can help him or her by educating yourself about the disorder.

Jennifer Kaplan has written several articles on ADHD and ADHD alternative treatments. On some of her articles, she has discussed the benefits that ADHD patients can get from ADHD alternative treatment.
