ADHD Food Dye: Does It Really Contribute To The Disorder?
By: John Martin

Scientists have done several studies to unravel the real cause behind the occurrence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and other disruptive behaviors, or a combination of all these, ADHD has affected millions of children not only in the US but in European countries as well.

Until now, the truth behind the causes of ADHD still remains a mystery. Despite the many experiments that have been performed, scientists are still at a loss as to what leads to the occurrence of this disorder.

Although the potential cause or causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are is still vague, several studies have found tidbits of information as to the elements that may trigger the onset or the aggravation of ADHD symptoms.

In a study made by the Southampton University in England a few years back, food dyes have been found to have effects on children with ADHD. The study employed approximately 300 ADHD children, with 153 children having an age of 3 and around 144 children with ages 8 to 9. Three groups of food dyes were used in the study.

The study, however, was not able to point out if food dyes indeed have a contributory factor to the onset of the symptoms of ADHD. The results of the study only implied that food coloring may have potential triggering mechanisms to the disorder.

Food dye is one of the most common ingredients that are found in almost all of the food we eat. They are synthetic chemicals used to add color to our foods. As they are synthetic, they may indeed cause problems to our health in the long run. Consequently, food dye ADHD may be very possible.

Even during the 1970s, several studies on food dye ADHD have been done by various scientists. Some of these studies have shown that food dyes can contribute to behavioral problems in ADHD children while some showed negative results. Several studies have also shown that food dyes can indeed be linked to hyperactivity and restlessness in children. Thus, some doctors may advice parents who have ADHD children not to give the children foods with dyes.

Diet therapy, an alternative treatment for ADHD which restricts the inclusion of some foods in an ADHD individual’s diet, prohibits the inclusion of foods which contain dyes or colorings. Some parents who have tried this on their children have reported positive feedback and improvements in their children. Perhaps if more studies will be funded on food dye ADHD, scientists will finally discover the connection of food colorings to ADHD.

Although it is not yet discovered if food dyes indeed have a contribution to the onset of ADHD in some children, it may probably help if you will minimize giving your ADHD child foods that contain artificial colorings. Start giving your child more nutritious and organic foods. With ADHD or not, these foods are good for the body. In addition, whether food dyes contribute to the aggravation of ADHD symptoms is out of the question. The truth is that it is synthetic and is a chemical and may not contribute to the whole well-being of an ADHD child.
