Every year, people get excited about thanksgiving. It's a time for the family to get together, for everyone to have a bit of turkey and some cranberry sauce. People fly home for the holiday and the airports are always jammed. It's in fact the second most traveled holiday in the United States after Christmas. However the most exciting thing of all for many people is the Walmart after thanksgiving ad.
A little explanation is in order. The day after Thanksgiving is known in the retail business as Black Friday. I remember the first time I heard that term, I thought that it meant that people were killed or something on that day. At the very least, I assumed it meant something bad, like Black Monday and Black Friday from the stock market crashes (I refer to the 1987 and 1929 crashes respectively). But no, actually what it means is that traditionally, retailers operated in the red all year long, borrowing money heavily in order to keep their stores going and only on Black Friday, with a little more than a month to go before the end of the year did they finally start to actually make money for themselves instead of paying costs and or taxes.
Today of course, retailers operate on different models. If a retailer is losing money all year long and only starts to make money toward the end of the year, then that retailer simply will not stay in business for very long. However, the tradition still pertains and because of that, the sales and the attendant Walmart after thanksgiving ad is one of the most important things that you can possibly see on Thanksgiving. Basically the idea is that the retailers will now be offering what they call “door buster” deals. They offer super cheap prices in order to lure people into the store and get them shopping for the Christmas holiday. These days, Black Friday is especially important since the economy is in such dire straights.
If you're checking out the Walmart after thanksgiving ad and trying to figure out what it is you'd like to buy the next day, be sure to show up very early and be a little aggressive. Go and get to what you really want first. Have a game plan mapped out and be sure that you go with someone. Also, be careful. Unfortunately, the deals on Black Friday and in the Walmart after thanksgiving ad will make some people act like idiots. Every year, there are a handful of people who are hurt or killed during the Black Friday craze, so be sure to stay away from people who look dangerous. No $10 DVD player is worth your life.
