Fun Games
By: Walter Hart

When you are looking for a game for your kids, consider their interests. If they are interested in sports games, are they strategy or role games? Find games that are popular and classified appropriate for the age of your children. Games that are challenging and are exciting without being violent will be a great pick. The designers of video games create violent games to satisfy the needs of young people to feel strong and in control. Try to find games that offer excitement for children and the chance to feel in control in a non-violent manner.

In choosing games for girls, look from among those that feature strong female characters and not stereotypes. Video games are expensive. Be certain that the game can capture their attention. Talk to other parents, read games magazines and visit the websites that offer game reviews. If possible, try the game first by borrowing or renting it.

Look for fun game that requires strategy and problem solving skills.

The results of a 2001 survey with students aged 9 to 17 years showed that parents rarely play video games with their children and they know very little about the characters or the classification. In fact, 69% of those surveyed say their parents do not play with them. And 76% say their parents do not consult the ratings classification. Young people will be much more inclined to follow your advice if you are really interested in their games.

Establish boundaries from the beginning with regard to violence and sexism. Feel free to prevent your children from games that you think are too violent or sexist. Explain the reasons for your decision. Set up a schedule with them, stating when to do other things (studies, sports, etc.). Explain that you do not want them to spend four or five hours straight at the screen for health reasons. But be flexible: the length of some games often exceeds one hour.

Be clear from the start: homework is a priority. If your children botch their work to play as soon as possible, set a schedule for fixed periods of play to reduce the punitive side, you can congratulate your children by giving them additional time or leasing a new game when you see improvement in their work and better performance.

If your children do not respect the agreement and play longer than expected, confiscate the controllers. Without them, no play is possible. Video games are often the cause of strife when they play individually. Pick children's games for two people or offer a chance to play as a team, taking turns. Encourage them to do other activities. It is easy for children to hang on a video game, to the point where nothing else exists around them. Make every effort to encourage them to play something else, going out, playing sports. Encourage your children to offer this system of sharing with their friends. Ask before you buy a game, its quality and originality.

One problem with these fun games is the price. Some ideas that will prevent you from emptying your wallet: Rent instead of buying: video stores rent out computer games and video games. Your children will be able to try several fun games. Check with other parents if it is possible to trade tapes.
