The Finest Subjects For Studying Drawing Online
By: Ruediger Schmidt

Whilst you are starting to be trained in drawing online you need to make certain that the subjects you select to draw are demanding enough to develop your ability but not so difficult that you get disheartened. So one of the doubts worrying those who learn drawing online is "What topics should I select to study drawing?"

The answer: Start attempting to draw common objects. But represent them in unusual ways. Even your shoe is an excellent object to set off with!

You should also try first drawing single objects which you have put up in front of you instead of attempting a full street scene on the initial day. Gadgets like kitchen paraphernalia and the various bits of flotsam and jetsam you find in your pockets or hand bag such as keys, lighters and cosmetics are also decent drawing topics. Gadgets, flowers, furniture, shoes and a variety of natural objects are also good subjects.

What about Drawing Statuettes?

A remark on statuettes as these seem to be very popular subjects for beginning artists: It is not a good initiative to draw statuettes as you will lose a lot of detailing and you are, as a matter of fact, drawing the diagram of a molding which was actually received from a picture. Hence your drawing will be much off the topic from the original subject. Disappointing drawings are the result, unless you manage to capture the statuette-like details of your subject like the surface orientation, light blemishes on the exterior etc.

Sketching from life vs. Sketching from Photographs

Drawing from life usually gives better results. You should actually draw from life as frequently as you can, there is no alternative.

But most budding artists do not make the grade and are disenchanted when trying to draw from life right from the beginning. So better practice drawing from photographs to prepare for the holy grail of drawing.

To defeat common pitfalls of standard photographs, try to shoot the photograph yourself. So you'll have an idea of the scene and connect expressively to the matter.

Be trained in Drawing from Life

Once you've made some progress drawing from photographs, it's time to make the next step: start drawing from life.

It's as essential component for you to practice once you have attained the preliminary skills. That means you should always attempt to draw something that in within your eyesight.

Whilst doing this it is surely a worthy idea to draw things from an arbitrary angle so that you are strained to observe the object carefully rather than just depending on your memory.

Also endeavor to match the type of article to the expertise you are trying to become skilled at. If you are rehearsing line drawing then a fuzzy toy will not be beneficial!

As for example your own hands are a fascinating topic for study and easy enough to start with - and they are always readily available!

More Practices to Learn Drawing

There are a lot of exercises you can do to get better at your drawing and there is surely not enough space here for listing all of them. But here are some thoughts:

- Aim drawing various objects using various media and different techniques. No drawing exercise ever goes un-fruitful and the new media will certainly help you to scrutinize your object in a diverse way.
- If you usually draw very slowly, try drawing faster, and vice versa.
- If you usually draw tiny and tight then try drawing big and loose.
- Challenge yourself and extend further and you will find that your normal drawing style will be better.
- You might also like to draw an object that is moving, like a person or an animal, as this will help you to do fast observations and to record them rapidly as the subject moves on.

And Most Essential ...

The most essential thing for which there is no replacement to learn drawing online is practice! Practice, practice, practice... When it is about drawing there is no substitute for good old elbow grease.
