There are many myths that explains how this favorite beverage was discovered. According to a popular and powerful myth tea was discovered around 2737 BC by the legendary Chinese emperor Shennong.
According to the tradition the emperor was sitting under the tree drinking a hot bowl of water and all of a sudden a leave from near by tree-blown by the air fell into it changing the color of the water. Out of curiosity emperor took few sips of it and found it very tasty and energizing. One legend also describes that since the emperor Shennong was the inventor of the agriculture and medicine he would chew the tea leaves to counter the poisonous effect of other herbs that he tested for the medicine purpose. Apart from these myths there are various other associated with the origin of tea and some of them are linked to Buddhist traditions. what ever be the reality; one thing is clear that at its inception tea was considered to be a healing/royal beverage
