All About Chocolate Truffles
By: Adolph Paul

Is it possible that you are unmoved at the sight of beautifully packaged, exquisite tasting range of chocolate truffles? The truth is whether you are a child or a child-at-heart, the luxury of enjoying the richness and taste of these truffles must not be missed.

Chocolate truffle has been around for a long time, giving pleasure to our senses and soul. No wonder, this sumptuous cocoa-infused goodness is everyone’s favorite! Plato mentioned it in his writing and the Bible also mentions desert truffle. Desert truffles were highly sought after by ancient Bedoins as spring delicacies.

Some Facts about Chocolate Truffles
The world’s first truffle was created in December 1895 by a Frenchman M. Dufour. The original French-invented truffle was made of ganache, chocolate and cream in the shape of a ball. It was also flavored and rolled in cocoa. The term “truffle” came from the glorious underground black truffle fungus due to its physical resemblance. Here are some truffle tidbits:

* At a time when the Kuwait war was on, some Kuwaitis were more disappointed about the loss of truffles than their country’s ransacking.
* The long-time president of North American Truffling Society, the late Henry Pavalek once said, "like bacon bits with something extra." Fuzzy truffle was among his favorites.
* In Italy, a professional truffle hunter is called a trifolau.

History of Chocolate Truffles
The creation of the first truffle was possible because of the invention of the cocoa press and the subsequent separation of cocoa butter. When the butter was removed from cocoa beans, the remaining powder was used to create solid chocolate. In 1879, Swiss Henri Nestle and Daniel Peter prepared milk chocolate using solid chocolate and milk powder. Experiments in Switzerland and France resulted in the invention of ganache, the main component of a truffle.

As the concept of chocolate truffles gained popularity, a range of truffle textures were prepared using white confectioner’s sugar onto which the center ganache was rolled. To develop flavors, Champagne and liqueurs were used.
