But having a dog for a friend and best mate is not without its obligations, its not just about giving him a good home or providing his food and water. This special relationship is definitely a two way street and means that I have to go that extra mile, which I willingly do, to provide the maintenance and love to keep my dog and best mate strong, fit and healthy.
I spend a lot of my time with my dog, my best friend and this definitely helps to deepen the relationship I have with him. It tells him that I love being in his company by playing and working together. This strengthens the bonds of communication, understanding and respect between me and my dog.
But do I really need formal "Tips On How To Train My Dog"?
In my case I don't believe I do as we have such a special relationship that we seem to be in sync and things just seem to take their natural course.
OK, most dog owners definitely do need tips on how to train their dog. There are numerous ways to teach a dog good behaviour and with a little imagination a dog can be taught good discipline and maybe a few party tricks through games instead of a formal training routine, and this can be a lot of fun for both the dog and the owner.
There are literally thousand of experts, each with sure fire ways to teach your dog how to behave, how to interact with other dogs, how not to wee on the carpet,how to behave with babies etc, you name it and there is sure to be an expert out there expounding their latest theory. But, in the end, what it all boils down to is basic common sense along with total committment to your dog, who should also be your best freind, and if you haven't got those two essential ingredients you probably shouldn't have a dog in the first place. You should really have a long hard think about whether you have the time, and whether you are willing to be totally committed to your dog.
Dogs love to run, so that should high on your list of activities. I love to run also so my mate and I do some 10 to 12 mile runs thru the bush at least 4 times a week. He loves being out in the natural surroundings and never gets bored. He chases the odd rabbit, never gets near to catching any, but he really enjoys himself.
The other most important thing, in my humble opinion, is nutrition.
How would you like to have that foul smelling canned dog food tossed in your bowl every day. Yuk. And I am sure your dog says yuk as well. Good wholesome, homemade meals with lots of variety are the key to keeping your dog healthy, happy and strong.
