Recent statistics have shown that the number of ADHD children have risen dramatically. Despite the many studies made by scientists, the ultimate treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has still remained vague. In fact, the cause of this problem still remains a mystery. The only thing that scientists can do at present is to make new medications to address the symptoms associated with the disorder.
It is important to note that ADHD children are not problems to society. They need understanding and proper care. Although their behaviors may be frustrating most of the time, we need to contemplate that it is not their fault that they have become like that. They have not chosen to have the disorder. They are victims themselves.
One of the many problems faced by ADHD children aside from the constant trigger of the symptoms may be discrimination from their peers, teachers, and other people around them. There is nothing more painful than being regarded as “different”. There is nothing more painful as being isolated from the world. What children with ADHD need are not discrimination and isolation; they need the love and understanding of the normal people around them. They may not be able to explain and express themselves, but in a way, amidst the constant isolation and discrimination that they may go through everyday, they also feel hurt.
If you have been browsing the Internet for information on ADHD, you may have come across testimonies of parents of how their children have been discriminated at school and in some public places. There was even a child who, because of his unmanageable behavior, was made to stand by the teacher in front of the class every day. The child had to stand facing his classmates during the duration of the class and had to contend with the laughter and ugly comments on him. Can you imagine what the child may have felt in that situation?
Because of what happened in his class, the child had become even more unmanageable and had developed an even more problematic behavior. The mother couldn’t do anything but to get the son out of the school and transfer him to another institution that was more tolerant to people with ADHD.
As normal people, we should understand that isolation and discrimination will not do ADHD children any good. In fact, those things will only trigger them to become more of a problem. ADHD children can feel the emotions of the people around them and these negative emotions can only aggravate the symptoms of the disorder.
How can we help children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? The best we can do to help them is to accept them as they are. Let us make them feel that although they are a bit different, they are also worthy of love and understanding. Perhaps through this way, we will be able to help them accept themselves better and to help them develop a better relationship with other people.
Jennifer Kaplan has written several articles on ADHD and ADHD alternative treatments. On some of her articles, she has discussed the benefits that ADHD patients can get from ADHD alternative treatment.
