What Is Abstract Art?
By: Jamie Hanson

One of the main characteristics of abstract art is that it removes the monotonous realism. It does not make the subject in an abstract painting recognizable. Also, it does not attempt to appear similar to something. An abstract painting's subject is the color, form and features of it.

The fluidity of abstract painting is the major reason of the dissimilarity of abstract art to realism. The work of Kandinsky illustrates this. Also, an abstract painting is geometric. An example of this will be Mondrian's abstract works.

Pablo Picasso is considered by other artists as the father of abstract painting. He made a way for a shift to abstract painting from the accustomed figurative painting. Picasso, along with George Braque, has found Cubism, a new mode of image representation. The idea of Cubism centralizes on the real meaning of an object to be captured only by a simultaneous demonstration of its different points of view.

Paintings that are not optical like emotion, sound and spiritual experience are all associated by abstract art. Figurative abstractions or reality simplifications are also classified with abstract painting, which eliminates detail from familiar objects and leaves the essence or some degree of identifiable form.

Because of the birth of synthetic cubism and analytical cubism, abstract art have gained more importance. Synthetic cubists make use of solid colors and ornamental shapes to take apart an object and reconstruct or produce its vital structural lines. Analytical cubists, on the other hand, reduce natural forms to their general geometric sections and reconcile these three-dimensional parts with a two-dimensional picture plane. In analytical cubism, colors are restrained and paintings are virtually monochromatic. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the leading cubists, initiated this movement. In contrast, Piet Mondrian and many other artists from 1914 and onwards popularized figurative paintings or pure abstract art which are also forms of cubist painting.

During the 1940s, Abstract Expressionism began to emerge applying the principles of expressionism to abstract painting. It is basically a painting movement where artists applied paint promptly, showing strong feelings and emotions. This kind of painting involves movements that are done in gestural form, non-geometrically, applying paint using large brushes, dripping, or even throwing paint into a canvas. The followers of this movement characterized a strong reliance on what comes out as an accident and chance, but strongly planned.

There are a few abstract expressionist artists who are more involved with implementing a serene and a thrilling approach to a purely abstract image. Usually, there is no effort in depicting the subject matter and not all are expressive because these expressionist artists believe that they are drawing from an impulsive approach to their work and thus, releasing the creativity within their unconscious minds. Their expressive way of painting was considered as essential like their painting itself.

In short, abstract art paintings do not portray any figurative realism. What it shows are real forms in basic ways. Thus, the making of an allusion to a real subject is the main principle of an abstract art.
