The Proper English Language
By: Eric V. Jacobs

The English Language is regarded as one of the most commonly used medium in terms of writing and speaking. The use of the English language has played an important role in the communication of different countries all over the world because it is the language that is usually spoken in order for people of various nationalities to understand each other. The importance of the English language is instilled upon most students from the day that they enter their respective educational institution. Being the case, educators have the responsibility of honing students in the use of the English language, especially in terms of paper writing assignments. Students are taught by their professors to do the academic way of writing by using the proper English language when they are writing their essays, research papers, and other requirements.

The use of the English language does not only entail that a student should just simply use English but rather they should also be mindful of its proper use in academic writing. The proper use of the English language involves choosing appropriate and formal words in a student’s term paper and other academic requirements. Appropriate and formal words means that students should not use slang English words such as: woulda, coulda, and shoulda, which are regarded as grammatically incorrect and not acceptable in academic writing. Furthermore, it is also important to point out that the English Language has several versions depending upon the country where it is used. The diversity of the English language can be simply seen in the use of your word document wherein there are several choices in terms of the English language. There is an English version that is commonly used in the United States while there are also respective English languages that are used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries. In this sense, students should also be aware that the use of English words and other technicalities like spelling and grammar tend to differ from one country to another, which is also important in properly coordinating their academic writing.

In addition to this, students should also be mindful that in writing academic papers they should use the third person point of view. Pronouns like I, me, my, and other similar first person identification should not be used. Academic papers usually pertain to research papers and dissertations that involve collection and analysis of data regarding a certain subject matter. In the process of studying the data of a study, the researcher should maintain utmost objectivity and impartiality in order to make sure that the results of the study is not influenced by the researchers own personal point of view. Being the case, the use of first person pronoun is not appropriate in academic writing.
