How To Get Financial Aid For Your Nursing Career
By: Amit Kothiyal

There is a great deal of financial aid for nurses, as this is one of the few careers that are highly in demand with a great shortage in many areas of the nation. Prospective students who are wondering how to pay for nursing degrees should not worry too much, although finding the money to pay for school can often seem difficult at first. If you are diligent and take some time to investigate the available resources, however, you should find funding to make your dreams of a nursing career come true.
One of the first resources that any undergraduate student at an accredited college or university in the United States should consider is federal aid. By filling out the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), you can see what kind of aid you qualify for and in what amount. There are many other types of financial aid for nurses in undergraduate programs, though, especially scholarships. You can also receive money in exchange for active duty service in the United States Army. There are numerous loan repayment or forgiveness programs as well, including state-sponsored loan forgiveness programs and a student loan repayment program at participating Tenet Hospitals.
If you think you have run out of possible ideas for how to pay for nursing degrees, all you have to do is look at any of the lists of scholarships on the Internet and you should find several that you can apply for. Scholarships are available for minorities and male nurses, for example, to encourage diversity in the field. Many states have their own scholarship programs to make sure a high level of qualified nurses are trained and ready to work in that state. The National Health Service Corps, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, also has information about scholarships and loan repayment programs for health care professionals who practice in a medically underserved area. Various foundations and associations also offer private scholarships to future nurses who plan on working in specific areas such as oncology.
If you’re still wondering how to pay for nursing degrees, there are resources such as the Bureau of Health Professions’ financial aid page, and many others.
