Embedded Systems And Applications
By: Srinivas

Embedded systems are ubiquitous. Microcontroller is the ‘brain’ of embedded systems. Unlike microprocessors (CPU in PC), a microcontroller does not require peripherals such as external RAM or external storage devices to operate. This means that although microcontrollers can be less powerful than their PC counterpart, developing circuits and products based on microcontrollers is much simpler and less expensive since very few additional hardware components are required. It is important to note that a microcontroller can output only a very small amount of electrical power through its pins; this means that a generic microcontroller will not be able to power electrical motors, solenoids, large lights, or any other large load directly. Many microcontrollers readily support the most popular communication protocols such as UART, RS232, SPI, and I2C. This feature is incredibly useful when communicating with other devices such as computers, advanced sensors, or other microcontrollers. ADCs are used to translate analog voltage signals to a digital number proportional to the magnitude of the voltage, this number can then be used in the microcontroller program. Now-a-days, microcontrollers can be programmed in various high-level languages including C, C++, C#, Java, Python, .Net and Basic. It is always possible to program them in Assembler but this privilege is reserved for more advanced users with very special requirements. In this sense, everyone should be able to find a programming language that best suit their taste and previous programming experience.

Microcontroller Addressing Modes, Instruction Set and Assembly Language Programming of 8051. Interfacing of Peripherals to Microcontroller Applications of Embedded Systems. Notes on lectures and experiments, in the form of a book, shall be given to the participants at the Registration Desk on January 6, 2012. Interfacing implementation for 8051 with LED, Stepper Motor, Matrix Keypad, Segment Display and many simple and complex experiments along with a few mini-projects shall be demonstrated to the participants.

The course is open to teachers/teacher-in-charges and technicians of laboratories in degree, polytechnic, P.G. and engineering colleges. A few seats are available for B.Sc., B.E., M.Sc., M.Sc.(Tech.), M.E., M.Tech., M.Phil. & Ph.D. students pursuing electronics discipline.
