Many people suffer with fungus infections of the nails, either on the toes or fingers. It is usually more common to have this problem in the toenails. This type of infection can sometimes become quite nasty. If this is the case for you, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible. There are however, some toenail fungus home remedies that you can try in the early stages of an infection.
There are several different types of fungal infections. The first type of fungus gets into the nail bed and underneath the plate. The second type gets into the layers of the nail. The next type is more uncommon, normally found in people with weak immune systems, penetrating the nail plate and the nail fold. The final fungus is much more common and is usually found in people that spend a lot of time with their hands or feet in water. This will be made worse if the nail has suffered a trauma.
The most obvious symptoms of an infection to this part of the body are easy to spot as they will be very visible. The nail will normally be yellow, thick, and often ragged and crumbly too. Sometimes the fungi can lead to lesions in unrelated parts of the body that will show themselves as a bad itch on the skin. This is a type of allergic reaction. If you develop an allergic reaction you should visit your doctor.
The bacteria that cause the infections can come from a variety of sources. Some of them have been linked to mice although this is rare. The bacteria more commonly comes from water and countries that have very warm temperatures. Elderly people are more prone to some of these bacteria than young people.
As well as older people being at risk of certain types of fungi, it has been proven that these type of problems can run in families. The fungi breed more easily in warm climates and people with problems with their immune systems are more susceptible to infections. People that do a lot of sports or use public swimming pools are also more likely to pick up the bacteria.
Should you be able to see a fungus infection coming on, act quickly with one of these home remedies and see if you can stop it before it gets a hold. One thing you can try is putting some tea tree oil on the toe. You could bathe the foot in the tea tree oil or soak a bandage in it to wrap around the toe. Tea tree oil is an effective antiseptic and fungicide. You should also try scrubbing the toe to remove the fungus.
The foot can also be bathed in a mouthwash. Again, these are antiseptics and the mouthwash also contains alcohol. The mouthwash can be mixed with natural acids, like some kinds of vinegar or lemon juice. The acid slows down the rate of fungi growth. The foot should be bathed in this solution at least once a day. You could also soak a large cotton wool pad in the solution and bandage it to the affected toe while you are going about your normal daily business.
These toenail fungus home remedies should be tried in the early stages of the infection. If you see no improvement within a couple of days you should visit your doctor. They will be able to prescribe some stronger anti fungal creams which could improve the situation greatly.
