Can Hormone Cure IgA Nephropathy
By: ningyuan

As the first choice in western medicine, hormone is proved effective in treating IgA Nephropathy by massive clinical indexes. However, with the trend of anti-hormone progressing, more and more patients become worried about its side effects. Then, what’s the exact role of hormone in treating IgA Nephroapthy? And can they cure IgA Nephroapthy?

To know the effect of hormone in treating IgA Nephropathy, we should get familiar with its therapeutic mechanism firstly. After hormone enters human body, it mainly restrains the immune response through control transporting information among macrophage, cellβand immunoblast, so as to remit intrinsic cell injury from the deposition of immune complex.

Meantime, glucocorticoid can balance polysaccharide synthesis and degradation, protect intercellular matrix and restrain the generation of prostaglandin, as well as control the activity of platelet factors, thus decreasing the production of toxic factors, achieving the goal of anti-inflammation. Glucocorticoid can control the progress of IgA Nephropathy in the early stage, but it fails to remit the pathologic changes of renal function cells, such as mesangial cell proliferation, the increase of mesangial matrix, the damage to glomerular basilar membrane, glomerular fibrosis and glomerular sclerosis etc. Therefore, it fails to block renal fibrosis. So toxic cell factors and toxic growth factors continue to produce, which accelerates renal aggravation.

In addition, uncontrolled use (increase or decrease dosage, even stop drugs without doctor’s permission) of hormone drugs can easily cause the relapse of IgA Nephropathy easily and accelerate the progress of renal fibrosis, which makes the treatment more and more complex. Also, due to the progress of renal fibrosis, renal function cells are damaged, which may lead to many side effects, such as Central Obesity, Low Hypokalemia, Edema and Hypertension etc.

From above, we can get hormone’s role in treating IgA Nephropathy. In a short-term, hormone remits the symptoms of IgA Nephropathy effectively and rapidly. But in a long-term, it fails to block renal fibrosis and repair damaged renal intrinsic cells, therefore, it can’t treat IgA Nephropathy from the root. In addition, long-term use of hormone may decrease immunity, induce all kinds of infection and accelerate renal fibrosis progressing. So when we are choosing some medicines or treatments, we should be cautious and ask clearly about the medicines and the doctors have prescribed for us, knowing its pros and cons so as to help us understand what condition we are in.
