MCSE Study Across The UK In Detail
By: Jason Kendall

Thinking of taking an MCSE? It's very possible then that you're in one of two situations: You're currently an IT professional and you'd like to gain accreditation with an MCSE certification. Instead you could be completely new to the computer world, and you've found there is a great need for those with appropriate certifications.

Be sure you see evidence that your provider is actually training you on the latest Microsoft level. A number of trainees become very demoralised when they discover they've been educated in an old version of MCSE which will require an up-date. A computer training organisation's attention should be on doing the absolute best they can for their trainees, and everyone involved should have a passion for their results. Career study isn't just about the certification - the process must also include guiding you on the most suitable route for you.

Only consider retraining paths which lead to industry accepted certifications. There are way too many trainers pushing minor 'in-house' certificates that are essentially useless in the real world. From an employer's perspective, only top businesses such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco (for instance) really carry any commercial clout. Nothing else hits the mark.

Finding your first job in the industry can feel more straightforward with the help of a Job Placement Assistance service. Don't get overly impressed with this service - it's easy for eager sales people to make too much of it. In reality, the still growing need for IT personnel in Great Britain is the reason you'll find a job.

Bring your CV up to date as soon as possible however (advice and support for this should come from your course provider). Don't procrastinate and leave it till the exams have actually been passed. You may not have got to the stage where you've got to the exam time when you will be offered your first junior support role; but this is not possible unless your CV is with employers. Actually, a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid commission to place you) will be more pro-active than a recruitment division from a training organisation. It also stands to reason that they'll know the area and local employers better.

A common frustration for a number of training course providers is how much students are prepared to work to become certified, but how un-prepared they are to work on getting the role they've trained for. Get out there and hustle - you might find it's fun.

The way a programme is physically sent to you is usually ignored by most students. How is the courseware broken down? And in what order and what control do you have at what pace it arrives? Typically, you'll enrol on a course taking 1-3 years and get sent one module each time you pass an exam. This sounds logical on one level, until you consider this: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each element at the required speed? Sometimes their preference of study order doesn't work as well as some other structure would for you.

To be straight, the best option is to get an idea of what they recommend as an ideal study order, but get everything up-front. You're then in possession of everything in the event you don't complete everything quite as quick as they'd want.

What is the reason why qualifications from colleges and universities are less in demand than the more commercial certifications? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, the IT sector has had to move to specific, honed-in training only available through the vendors themselves - in other words companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA. This usually turns out to involve less time and financial outlay. Academic courses, for instance, clog up the training with vast amounts of loosely associated study - with a syllabus that's far too wide. Students are then prevented from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

In simple terms: Recognised IT certifications provide exactly what an employer needs - the title says it all: for example, I am a 'Microsoft Certified Professional' in 'Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure'. Therefore companies can look at their needs and which qualifications will be suitable to deal with those needs.
