I love working here…
One of the keys to business success is a talented and reliable work force. The thing is, while they need to meet all your requirements in order for you to employ them in the first place, you also need to fit theirs. If they are not happy then they may be out the door before you know it, and that’s going to affect your business in the long run.
This makes keeping your staff happy one of your top priorities. For those that can afford it, upping wages into the stratosphere is the easy way make staff endlessly happy, but for those that have realistic budgets, this just isn’t possible.
Here are 4 ways to make them happy without spending huge amounts of money:
Communication
One of the main complaints from lots of office workers is that they don’t have enough communication from senior staff. This is because it can feel quite hard to reveal the issues and plans of the business as this requires a great deal of trust and also because they may be restricted by directors/shareholders. A good way of providing a satisfactory amount of communication is to have senior staff (especially directors and owners) write a blog every week or so that every member of staff can read which can be commented on openly so that everyone feels they have a chance to know what is going on and that their questions can always be heard and answered.
Liberties
While many owners will do their best to control their staff to the nth degree in order to maintain discipline and to be able to manage more effectively, it is often very unwise as people will always rebel in the face of control. If you instead allow staff to do things like dress down if they want, have flexible working hours and transferrable holidays, then it gives them greater responsibility for their actions and makes them feel happier and less controlled.
Cleanliness
One thing never to overlook is the importance of cleanliness. Nothing will annoy staff more than a dirty toilet or a grubby social area. Ensuring that your office cleaning staff is doing a good job and that they have enough team members and enough hours in order to maintain a high level of cleanliness is well worth it in the long run.
Fun
Don’t be afraid to allow staff to have dress up days, social events after work, to grow beards for charity, have access to games and computer games at lunchtimes or anything else that will make them relax and smile.
A happy workforce is an effective workforce.
