What Is The History Of Hummer?
By: Mark Smith

The Hummer was developed in 1979 by the U.S military to replace jeeps and lighter vehicles. It was an instant success on the battle fields. It grew in popularity during the gulf war, as the American news broadcast showed soldiers driving around Hummers.

Hummers were first made really famous when we found out that that was what Arnold Schwarzenegger drove, and that little tidbit of information told us all we needed to know about these monster vehicles. The Hummer was a car of the stars and so probably not in our everyday price range, plus the star which had chosen to make these adapted army vehicles famous was a former body builder, former Mr Universe and one of the toughest men in Hollywood, on and off the screen.

We all heard about Hummer that most know and recognize began as a very different type vehicle. Designed for the military by AM General Corporation, AMC's Jeep General Products division, the first High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle or Hum-Vee for short, came with many different military grade options.

By the 1990's the public was completely infatuated with the large heavy-duty vehicles and Hummers began appearing regularly in popular culture. Some of the most notable include the show CSI: Miami in which the crime lab Lt Horatio Cain drives one during the sixth season. They have also been featured on the big screen as well. In the 2007 Transformers movie, one of the Autobots transforms into a search and rescue Hummer H2.

Well-known Hummer began in 1979 with a request from the Army to design and build a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV).The proposed Chrysler vehicle was an adapted version of the Saluki desert design; Teledyne's design motivated from the design of a vehicle known as the Cheetah. AM General, the underdog, came from behind and soon created what is known today as the original - the HUMMER.

The first civilian High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, the Hummer, entered the market in 1991 and soon grew immensely popular. t was initially promoted by a race in 1990 where two Hummers traversed the rough terrain between London, UK and Beijing, China.

There have been 3-generation designs so far and each one is classed numerically. The first generation is known as the Hummer H1, the second is the Hummer H2 and the third generation was given the designation Hummer H3.

The Hummer has developed somewhat of a cult following and car clubs have popped up across the country. Because the Hummer has such heavy-duty capabilities, they have been used in many humanitarian efforts in disaster situations. So much so that the owners have formed Hummer Owners Prepared for Emergencies (Hope).
