Collision Car Insurance
By: Brock Timberman

The law requires that you have it. If you get pulled over, the officer will ask you to provide proof that you do. If you have a loan, the bank will require that you provide proof that it is in place. Your credit rating can affect your ability to purchase it. Auto Insurance is something we all have to deal with. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements from companies wanting us to check them out and save hundreds and thousands of dollars by switching over to their company. Lizards talk to us on television about auto insurance and money follows us around and taunts us with what we can save by switching.

All states require that you at least carry liability insurance on your auto. You have also heard the terms comprehensive and collision thrown around in regards to insurance policies. These two things are not required by law, but if you have a loan on your car through a bank, they will require that you have it until the loan is paid off. What is collision insurance? What is comprehensive insurance?

Collision insurance is pays for the damage to your vehicle when it hits or is hit by another car or object. This type of coverage will pay to fix your vehicle minus whatever deductible you have in place.

Comprehensive coverage is basically everything that is not collision insurance. This insurance pays for damages to your vehicle caused by things other than collision. Things like theft, fire, floods, or damage done by animals or other extreme acts are covered by comprehensive insurance.

You can get an auto insurance policy pretty much any way you like. The options are literally endless. Let's take a look at collision insurance and find out the best way to go about obtaining it.

You can purchase collision insurance without getting comprehensive insurance, but often times it does not work the other way around. The question needs to be asked, do I need collision insurance? If you drive a 1978 Ford Pinto that has the floor boards rusted out, you probably don't need collision insurance. You will pay more for it in the first year than the car is worth, and most providers will tell you this. However, if you have a brand new corvette that is paid for, you will most certainly want collision insurance.
