If You Have A Guitar, Learn To Play It
By: Dimitris Stacosta

If you, like many others don't play but have a guitar, learn to play it. Many people have an instrument hidden in their homes that they never use. Below are some steps you can follow if you want to learn to play the guitar.

1. If you don't have guitar then it's time to purchase one. You can get good acoustic guitars in the price range from $75 to $200.

If you want a more advanced model it will cost you from $250 and up. There are lots of acoustic guitar brands and models and I recommend that you go to your local music store and pick a guitar that fit your preferences as well as your budget.

2. Learn to play the elementary or 'open chords'; C, G, A, and D. As soon as you have mastered these basic chords, you will be capable to play loads of different songs. So, how can I learn the basics? Here are some options:

- purchase a guitar course book for the beginner's level
- get a teacher
- find a guitar e-learning beginner program

3. Learn to read guitar tablature.Go to the internet and search for guitar tablature and you will find tablature for thousands of songs many of them for free.

Guitar tablature is an image of the guitar neck marked with dots where you are supposed to place your fingers to play a certain chord. When a chord change is needed a new image shows the new chord etc. All you have to do is go to the internet and search for guitar tabs and you will find tablature for thousands of songs many of them for free.

4. The next step is learning to play barre chords. These are chord "shapes" that can be moved up and down the guitar neck. To learn barre chords it's smart to

- purchase a guitar course with barre chords
- practice by playing these shapes and moving them up and down the neck.
- buy printed guitar song books with tabs or download them from the internet

Sometimes the tablature will even include a diagram of a barre chord used in the particular piece of music.

5. Practice Make Perfect. If you have a guitar, learn to play it by practicing much but practice the right way You'll need to put much time in practicing, especially in the beginning.

Get into the habit of playing right from the very first time you start to learn a new piece of music. If not you'll be a "master" of playing wrong and it will take a lot more time to learn it the correct way.

Slow and thoughtful practice causes fast progress. Before you play read the tabs, listen to a good recording, try to hear the piece of music for your inner ear and try to figure out which movements you have to make to get it sound like you want. A great recording is also good to compare your progress with.

6. Learn to finger pick. This is a very common technique in very many songs and pieces for guitar so you need to practice this as well. Mastering finger picking takes time. By using the method of practicing described above you'll master it incredibly fast.

If you, after reading this are still interested and you have a guitar, learn to play it. If you don't have why don't you buy one?

Learning Guitar from the internet is convenient and flexible. If you have access to or own a guitar, learn to play it! If not, go to your music store and purchase one.
