The Bible tells us about people who were gifted with the ability to lead others in song. We read about people who connected to god through guitar and other instruments like horns, tambourines, harps, and flutes. The Psalmist gave us hundreds of rich lyrics. Praise and worship through song is an important facet of the Christian life. It continues even to this day, now with new instruments such as the piano, the guitar, and even the drums.
To be anointed as a worship leader is a great calling. To show others the Lord through skill on an instrument is a blessing-filled challenge. To sing in a way that brings glory to God and touches lives is a beautiful ministry. If God has so called you to be a worship leader, it is important that you offer Him your talent, your ability, and your very best.
In modern worship, the guitar is perhaps the most popular instrument used. Most of our worship leaders today use a guitar for their ministry. Though the guitar is not mentioned in the Bible, worship to our God can be expressed beautifully and magnificently through this instrument. The combination of chords and strumming patterns produce a rich sound so conducive to worship songs, both old and new.
To show others the Lord through guitar, a worship leader must have skill. Someone who cannot truly play his instrument cannot fully express worship through it. Therefore, it is essential that a worship leader be comfortable and confident on his guitar and able to use it in a variety of ways.
However, skill is not the only aspect to worshipping God through the guitar. Any worship leader, no matter how skilled, must also possess the anointing of the Lord. We cannot expect to do anything in our own strength, and without God's power and grace, we are limited in our worship. God's hand upon an ordinary guitar player can create sweet worship which will bring others into the presence of God.
